Iconic Aussie Foods!

30.09.2025

One of the best things about visiting a new country is trying new foods!

In Australia we have some unique foods that you must try while you are in the country.

Head to your nearest Woolies (Woolworths supermarket) and grab some of these Aussie staples to try!

Vegemite

This thick, brown spread is made from yeast and is one of the most prolific Aussie delicacies. While foreigners often attempt to eat the spread by the spoon like Nutella, it is actually a breakfast staple and is most commonly enjoyed on toast with butter! Definitely give it a go!

Tim Tams

This chocolate-covered biscuit is one of the most popular treats across Australia. They come in many different flavours, but my favourite is the double coat! The biscuit even has its own tradition called a Tim Tam Slam where you bite each end of the biscuit and use it to drink a beverage through the middle for extra deliciousness.

Meat Pies

At any sporting event in Australia, you will be sure to find a meat pie. Aussie pies are flaky pastries filled with minced meat and covered in tomato sauce. They also come in other shapes than the standard size. A traveller’s pie which is an elongated version designed for truck drivers to eat on the move, and a party pie which is a mini version of the standard that are often served at parties.

Fairy Bread

Fairy bread is one of the more unusual Aussie foods but is very easy to make! This is a nostalgic treat for many Aussies as it is typically served as children’s birthday parties! All you need is a piece of white bread, butter and hundreds and thousands (Aussie sprinkles) and that’s it! It may seem strange but don’t knock it until you try it!

Fish and Chips

Fish and chips on the beach are an Aussie rite of passage. The fish (usually snapper or barramundi), is battered meaning it’s crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside. The most important part of this dish is that the chips are covered in a thick layer of what we call chicken salt. Chicken salt is an Aussie seasoning that we like to put on chips, fish, meat, potato scallops or anything fried!

These are just a few of the delicacies that you should check out while in Australia! Be adventurous and try something different!
